Although smart lighting uses Wi-Fi to control lights, you can still operate it without a connection if the Wi-Fi goes out. 

The smart switch may need a firmware update to gain access to the internet. If that happens, simply perform a quick reset of the switch.

Some smart lights use Wi-Fi and require no gateway or hub. Other smart switches use a different wireless protocol, like ZigBee, which can be problematic in areas with bad reception. 

A Wi-Fi-only light switch may need a smart hub to connect with the other devices in the house. If you are concerned about security, you can always opt for a WiFi-only switch.

While smart Wi-Fi light switches rely on a wireless connection to transmit signals, they can also rely on a wired power connection to the light fixtures.
